Launching soon · Smart-home planning for renovations

Plan your smart home
before the walls close.

See how other homes set up their lighting, switches, curtains, blinds, heating and air conditioning. Save what fits into your own plan and hand your contractor the pre-wiring checklist. Then a vetted Setup Partner comes over to finish the pairing and automations.

We're preparing for launch. Email us and you'll be the first to know.

Bare shell · Walls openThis is the moment to decide.

The renovation window

  2. Plumbing & wiring
  3. Windows
  4. Carpentry
  5. Tiling & paint
  6. Flooring
  7. Move-in
  8. Device setup

01 · The window

Renovation runs in a fixed order.

Demolition, wiring, carpentry, finishes. Each trade comes in, does its part and leaves. Nobody goes back a step.

Smart-home wiring is decided in one short window.

A neutral wire to every switch box. An outlet inside the curtain box. A thermostat line your boiler can actually talk to. Easy while the walls are open. A whole new job once they're closed.

Then the walls close.

Miss one of these and the fix means opening finished walls, running wiring on the surface, or settling for a device you didn't want.

And nobody comes back to set it up.

The electrician mounts the hardware and leaves. Pairing, naming rooms and the "turn everything off when we leave" routine fall to you, and that's where most smart homes stall.

Wall cross-section: smart-home wiring goes in, the wall closes over it, and the devices are left unpaired

aa-family covers both ends of that window: the decisions before, and the setup after.

02 · Your plan

Six things to decide while the walls are open.

We start with the devices that change daily life the most, and that need preparing during construction.

Lighting

Brightness and color that follow the time of day.

Before the walls close

  • Pick one approach per circuit: smart bulbs, smart switches or in-ceiling relay modules
  • Want dimming? Confirm the LED driver supports it
  • Group fixtures on circuits the way you'll use them in scenes
02 / 06

Smart switches

Same spot as today. Works by hand, by app and on a schedule.

Before the walls close

  • Run a neutral (N) wire to every switch box
  • Map out 2-gang, 3-gang and two-location (3-way) switches
  • Check box depth. Smart switches sit deeper than standard ones
03 / 06

Motorized curtains

Open with the morning light, close when the sun goes down.

Before the walls close

  • An outlet inside the curtain box, at the motor end
  • A box deep enough for a double track (sheer + blackout)
  • Decide center-open or one-way, and reinforce the ceiling for the track
04 / 06

Motorized blinds

Roller, wood or combi blinds that move with the sun.

Before the walls close

  • Wired or rechargeable battery: decide window by window
  • If wired, bring power to the top corner of the window
  • Measure the recess after the new window frames go in
05 / 06

Thermostats

Heat each room on its own, and warm up before you're home.

Before the walls close

  • Confirm your boiler's make, model and how its thermostat communicates
  • Room-by-room control needs valve actuators on the manifold
  • Mount controllers away from direct sun and heat sources
06 / 06

Air conditioning

Cool before you arrive. Off when no one's home.

Before the walls close

  • Maker's Wi-Fi or an IR hub: choose per unit
  • System AC: check the central controller can be integrated
  • If using IR, leave an outlet where the hub can see the unit

ExampleExample plan · 84 m² apartment

One plan. Nothing left to chance.

Every plan comes with a pre-wiring checklist you can hand straight to your interior contractor. Here's the one for this example. Take it.

Network · A wired access point near the center of the home, plus a powered spot for the hub

03 · A day at home

Same room. Same day. Nothing to tap.

Wake up

The blind rises halfway. The lights come on low and warm. The floor is already warm.

Weekdays 06:50 → Blind 50% · Lights 30%, 2700K · Heating 21°

Last one out

When the last phone leaves home, every light goes off and the heating drops to eco. Nobody has to remember.

Everyone away → Lights off · Heating 18° · AC off

Afternoon sun

South sun pours in. The curtains draw halfway and the blind drops to 70%. If the room still passes 27°, the AC holds it at 26° for the dog.

Strong sun → Curtains 50% · Blind 70% · Above 27° → AC 26°

On your way

Fifteen minutes from home, the heating comes back up. You walk into exactly the right temperature.

15 min from home → Heating 22°

Welcome home

The door opens, the lights come up and the curtains close for the evening.

Door opens after sunset → Lights 80%, 3500K · Curtains close

Wind down

The lights fade to amber. The blackout blind comes down. The heating eases off for sleep.

22:30 → Lights 15%, 2200K · Blind 100% · Heating 20°

05 · Setup Partners

The last mile, done properly.

The last step is where smart homes fall apart, so it's the step we're defining most carefully. Every Setup Partner will be held to the same written standard.

How partners get listed

  1. ApplyExperience, service area and the platforms you work with.
  2. Credential checkBusiness registration, plus an electrical license wherever wiring is involved.
  3. Hands-on checkPairing and automations on each platform you list.
  4. First jobs reviewedEarly handovers are checked against the standard.
  5. ListedYour profile goes live. Reviews come only from completed bookings.

Electrical work is done only by licensed professionals. Setup Partners without a license handle pairing, configuration and automation.

For partners

Good at smart homes? Be one of our first partners.

We're recruiting our first Setup Partners now. Electricians, interior contractors, integrators and long-time Home Assistant tinkerers are all welcome, and you'll help shape the standard above.

In your email, tell us three things:

  1. 01Where you work
  2. 02The platforms you set up
  3. 03One job you're proud of

or write to [email protected]

  • Jobs with clear requirements

Quote against a room-by-room plan with the automations already listed. Less guessing on site.

  • Your area, your platforms

Set where you work and what you support, and receive only the requests that fit.

  • Every job becomes your portfolio

With the homeowner's consent, finished setups are shared as cases, and the next client finds you through them.

06 · Groundwork

We did the homework first.

Before opening a marketplace, we worked out which platforms to cover, what has to happen before the walls close, how we'll make money and what we'll build in which order. Here's all of it.

Compatibility map

Built around the platforms you already use.

We don't push one ecosystem. Every case and every partner is tagged across six device types and five platforms, so you only see setups that fit your home.

Thermostats × Home Assistant → heating setups running on Home Assistant

Each cell is a search filter: cases and partners are tagged by device and platform. It is not a claim that every model works.

*Apartment wallpad integration varies by building and is checked case by case.

Compatibility depends on the exact model and firmware. Your Setup Partner confirms it against your plan before the visit.

Pre-wiring playbook

What happens if you miss the window

The plan above lists what to prepare. For every device we also track two more things: what goes wrong when it's missed, and what still works if you've already moved in.

  • Lighting

    If it's missed

Smart bulbs behind a regular switch go offline the moment someone flips it.

    Already moved in?

Smart bulbs work with no wiring at all.

  • Smart switches

    If it's missed

Without a neutral you're limited to a few no-neutral models, and some make LED lights flicker.

    Already moved in?

No-neutral models exist, but they limit which lights and features you can use.

  • Motorized curtains

    If it's missed

No outlet in the box means a cord down the wall, or opening the ceiling again.

    Already moved in?

Battery motors exist, but you'll be recharging them.

  • Motorized blinds

    If it's missed

Battery blinds go anywhere but need charging. Fine for one window, a chore for ten.

    Already moved in?

Rechargeable models install without any construction.

  • Thermostats

    If it's missed

A thermostat that can't talk to your boiler is just a thermometer on the wall.

    Already moved in?

If your boiler supports it, swapping the thermostat is often enough.

  • Air conditioning

    If it's missed

IR can't confirm the unit actually turned on. Fine for simple routines, limiting for precise ones.

    Already moved in?

If it works with a remote, an IR hub can usually connect it.

General guidance. Exact requirements depend on your devices and building, so your Setup Partner confirms them on site.

How work and money are planned to flow between the homeowner, aa-family and the Setup Partner
How work and money are planned to flow between the homeowner, aa-family and the Setup Partner

How we plan to earn

  • Browsing cases and building a plan are free for homeowners.
  • A service fee on setups booked through aa-family. Joining is free for partners.
  • Later, optional tools for partners and interior studios.

What we won't do

  • Sell devices or take a cut from brands
  • Let anyone pay to rank higher
  • Keep your home's accounts or sell your data

We don't sell devices, so our recommendations have no reason to lean toward any brand.

07 · FAQ

Good questions

Is aa-family open yet?

Not yet. We're preparing for launch. Join the early-access list and we'll tell you first when and where we open.

My renovation is already finished. Is this still for me?

Yes. Smart bulbs, rechargeable blinds and IR-controlled air conditioners need no rewiring, and we're building a "No rewiring" filter for cases.

Do I have to buy devices from you?

No. Buy them wherever you like. We focus on shared setups, planning and connecting you with a Setup Partner.

Does aa-family do electrical work?

No. Wiring is done by your interior contractor or a licensed electrician. We give them a clear pre-wiring checklist, and Setup Partners handle pairing and automation afterwards.

How is the setup price decided?

Partners quote against your plan: the number of devices, the automations you want and anything particular about your home. You compare the quotes and choose.

Which platforms do you cover?

SmartThings, Apple Home, Google Home, Home Assistant and Matter. What works together depends on the exact models, and that's what cases and partners help you figure out.

Who owns the accounts after setup?

You do. Pairing every device to your accounts and removing partner access at handover are part of the Setup Partner standard.

Will my address be visible?

No. Cases are designed to show home type and size, never the address. Your address goes only to the partner you book.

Why would I share my own setup?

It becomes the record you'll want when you add or replace devices, and it saves the next family a lot of guesswork. We're also preparing perks for members who share.
